The Southern Right Whales come to the waters of Hermanus every year and they can be viewed sometimes only metres from the shore as they rear their young babies and play in the shallow waters. The “Whale Crier” announces the presence and where about of the Whales.

Hermanus is the best land-based whale watching destination in the world, playing host to thousands of visitors (over 130 thousand visitors in 2014) who flock to the seaside resort to exhilarate in the unique natural environment, watch the whales and revel in music, enjoy great food and enjoy the many activities available during the festival.
The Hermanus Whale Festival has been running since 1992. This amazingly pretty South African seaside town offers spectacular coastlines and stunning beaches, where the Southern Right Whales can be seen at such close quarters, with the top record of 196 whales viewed in just 1 day! There’s no better time to view them than during October.
